Shaving versus Waxing – Which Is Better for Smooth Skin?
When it comes to hair removal, one of the most common questions we hear at Queen B Luxury Nail and Beauty Lounge is:
“Should I wax or should I shave?”
It’s a fair question—and if you’ve ever reached for your razor in a panic before a holiday, or booked a last-minute wax to stay smooth longer, you’ve probably wondered which is truly better.
In this guide, we’ll explore the pros and cons of shaving versus waxing, debunk some common myths, and help you decide what’s right for you and your skin. Plus, we’ll share expert advice from our team of beauty therapists at Queen B to help you get the best results—whichever route you choose.
Shaving Versus Waxing – An Overview
Hair Regrowth Time:
Waxing lasts 3–6 weeks before new growth appears, offering long-term smoothness. In contrast, shaving sees regrowth within 1–3 days, making it a short-term solution.
Skin Smoothness:
Waxing results in softer regrowth with no stubble, leaving skin smoother for longer.
Shaving, however, often causes rough stubble, which can be felt almost immediately.
Pain Level:
Waxing involves a moderate but quick pain, which many guests find tolerable for the results.
Shaving is completely painless, though the trade-off is in longevity and texture.
Risk of Irritation:
Waxing may cause temporary redness, but also provides gentle exfoliation of dead skin cells.
Shaving carries a higher risk of razor burn, nicks, and cuts, particularly with dull blades or sensitive skin.
Cost:
Waxing requires a higher upfront cost, but because it lasts much longer, it often proves more cost-effective over time.
Shaving is cheap initially, though it requires frequent product purchases like razors and creams.
Best For:
Waxing is ideal for those who want long-term smoothness and are happy to maintain a regular routine.
Shaving suits those looking for a quick fix or emergency solution without preparation.
How Does Waxing Work?
Waxing involves applying warm wax to the skin and removing hair from the root. Because the entire hair is pulled out, results last much longer than shaving.
Pros of Waxing
Smooth results for 3–6 weeks
Hair grows back finer and softer
Reduces the risk of ingrown hairs over time
Encourages slower hair regrowth
Cons of Waxing
Can be uncomfortable (especially at first)
Requires some hair growth (around ¼ inch)
Not ideal if you’re on certain medications or have very sensitive skin
How Does Shaving Work?
Shaving is the most common hair removal method because it’s quick, easy, and can be done at home. A razor cuts hair at the surface of the skin, meaning regrowth happens fast—usually within a day or two.
Pros of Shaving
Convenient and fast
Painless
No appointments needed
Good for last-minute touch-ups
Cons of Shaving
Regrowth is almost immediate
Prone to cuts, razor burn, and ingrown hairs
Hair feels coarser and can appear darker
Requires frequent maintenance
What About Pain? Let’s Talk Comfort
Waxing does involve a short, sharp sting—but it’s quick and gets easier the more often you do it.
At Queen B, our waxing treatments are performed by experienced professionals who use premium-quality wax from Perron Rigot designed to minimise discomfort and redness.
Shaving is mostly pain-free, but the ongoing battle with razor bumps, irritation, and dry skin can be a long-term nuisance. Not to mention—shaving over the same area repeatedly increases your risk of hyperpigmentation and skin sensitivity.
How Fast Does Hair Grow Back?
This is where waxing truly shines. Shaving only cuts the hair above the surface—so regrowth is visible in a day or two (sometimes even within hours). Waxing, on the other hand, removes hair from the root.
That means you can enjoy baby-smooth skin for up to 3–6 weeks.
Better still, the more regularly you wax, the thinner and softer your hair becomes over time. Eventually, regrowth is patchy, slower, and far easier to manage.
Is Waxing More Expensive Than Shaving?
At first glance, shaving seems more budget-friendly. You only need a razor and maybe a bit of shaving cream. But over time, the costs add up: razors, replacement blades, aftercare products, and the toll on your skin.
Waxing is an investment, but with fewer appointments and longer-lasting results, many of our guests find it’s absolutely worth it. Plus, professional waxing significantly reduces the risk of skin trauma—unlike a rushed shave with a blunt blade.

Ingrown Hairs, Bumps, and Irritation
Shaving is notorious for causing ingrown hairs, especially around the bikini line, underarms, and legs. When hair is cut at the skin’s surface, it can curl back into the follicle and cause red bumps, itching, or even infection.
Waxing, when done properly, actually helps to reduce ingrown hairs—especially when paired with good exfoliation and aftercare.
At Queen B, we recommend regular use of our exfoliating body scrubs to keep your skin soft and smooth between appointments.

Can I Wax Sensitive Areas?
Absolutely—and we do it every day. From bikini waxing and everything removed down below (Hollywood and Brazilian) waxing to facial waxing (brows, upper lip, and chin), we’ve seen it all and are experts in treating sensitive areas with care.
We use Perron Rigot wax formulated for delicate skin and follow strict hygiene protocols to ensure your experience is as comfortable and safe as possible.
How to Prepare for Your Waxing Appointment
Getting the best results from waxing starts before you step into the salon. Here’s what we recommend:
Let hair grow to at least ¼ inch (around 2-3 weeks’ worth of growth)
Exfoliate gently the day before
Avoid tanning, sunburn, or harsh skincare on the area
Wear loose-fitting clothing on the day of your appointment
Take a deep breath and relax—we’ll take care of the rest!
Aftercare Tips for Waxing
After waxing, your skin may feel a little sensitive. To soothe the area and prevent irritation, follow these tips:
Avoid hot showers, steam rooms, and exercise for 24 hours
Use a soothing lotion or aloe vera gel
No exfoliation or harsh products for at least 2 days
Wear breathable fabrics

Common Myths About Waxing vs Shaving
Let’s debunk some old-school beauty myths:
❌ “Shaving makes hair grow back thicker and darker.”
Nope! Shaving just blunts the tip of the hair, which makes it feel coarser, but it doesn’t affect the follicle.
❌ “Waxing is too painful.”
It’s quick, and we promise—it gets easier over time. Especially in professional hands.
❌ “You can’t wax during your period.”
You can—but you may be a little more sensitive. We’re discreet, and your comfort always comes first.
❌ “You shouldn’t wax if you have sensitive skin.”
Actually, we offer specialised wax and techniques designed for delicate skin types.
What’s the Verdict? Shaving Versus Waxing
If you’re after quick and convenient, shaving may do the trick in the short term. But if you’re looking for longer-lasting smoothness, finer regrowth, and better skin health, waxing is the clear winner.
Many of our guests start with shaving but quickly switch to waxing once they see (and feel) the difference. And when you wax with professionals who care about your experience, it becomes less of a chore and more of a treat.

Can you wax eyebrows too? I’ve always plucked them
Yes, you can wax pretty much everywhere and eyebrow waxing is super popular.
It takes minutes to do and is very precise, your therapist will also pluck out a few stragglers if required.
Plucking, when done by a trained professional can be super accurate.
The only risk with constant plucking is overdoing it. Eyebrow hairs don’t always grow back.
It is crucial not to over-pluck or you may risk damaging or losing your eyebrow follicles for good.
What is threading?
Threading is very different to waxing. It removes hair in numerous directions and because of this it can be difficult to remove hairs accurately.
Ultimately this has a negative effect on the hair follicle and the skin that surrounds it. This can tear the follicle if hair is removed. Sometimes the hair is not removed, it may just be broken from the surface of the skin.
Hence the pain! Worse still, if the hair is broken at the skin, it can grow back in different directions and it will also grow back faster.
If it is fully removed, it could be like laser, permanent. Not really the look you want for your brows…Or is it?
